I lost a couple of clients recently, and it has prompted a return to the Medium platform with a superb tale about a creature called the Beast of Gevaudan.
Two clients were limited projects that I knew were coming to an end. The third was a marketing company that need really generic content about crypto. I then became an editor for them as most of their writers seemed to be from Eastern Europe or India. Then ChatGPT came along, and the marketing company I worked for got shut down. (I wrote about this last month. )
Such is life.
On the plus side, this has freed me up to write about topics I enjoy on platforms I like. I have been writing a lot for www.scifiward.com, for example. If you love science fiction, give it a look.
I also checked my Medium homepage and was somewhat shocked to find I hadn’t written anything for just over five and a half months. If you don’t write something there for six months, you don’t get any money from the partnership program. So I write a story I had been meaning to do for months. It involves the real-life tale of a beast that prowled the French countryside at the end of the 18th century called – you guessed it – the Beast of Gevaudan.
I intend to write more on Medium as it consistently earns money without me having to do all that much. But you are rewarded if you write there more often, so that is the plan. I have a ton of ideas lined up and am pretty excited about it.
You can check out the story here. It killed hundreds of people and was well documented, but no one seems completely certain about what it was. Theories include werewolves, armoured dogs, hyenas, lions, and giant wolves.
I am also writing a science fiction novel with the tentative title – The Portals of Ix. It is a lot of fun. I suspect I will be writing more about that in the future.
I recently finished ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad’ by Robert Kiyosaki and it got me thinking about how to make money more sustainably. The main thrust of it is to invest in things that generate ongoing income. This investment also includes time. Applying that to writing (and most jobs) means moving away from the kind of work I was doing. Essentially, doing work that pays for your time. I would take a couple of hours to write an article, then get a one-off payment. Then I was done. If the client stops needing me, then no more cash.
I haven’t written on Medium for six months, yet still got a paycheck every month. That seems like a better idea.
Also, finally… drumroll… I will be compiling a book of my most popular Medium stories. Several had over 50k reads, and I think they deserve more. More on that later as well.
Enjoy the Beast of Gevaudan!
