Starting a Substack and building an awesome email list

Substack, newsletters, building an email list… These are all things you should be doing and people will tell you off if you’re not. Or maybe that’s just the crowd I am running with.

I’ve had ‘start a newsletter’, ‘check out Substack’, and ‘start building an email list’ on my Apple Reminders thingy for years. They have sat there the whole time in the Today section, making me feel guilty and lazy every morning.

Well, that has now changed. I finally got around to starting a Substack and have created a newsletter called The Cosmic Scroll.

When it comes to writing regularly on a topic, I have three things I am pretty knowledgeable about –

1 – Writing and literature. These are kind of separate, but my degree is in English Language and Literature, so I thought I’d lump them together. Modern online journalism/writing or discussing why Orwell was so good don’t really mix. This site is more about writing than anything else. And I’ve tried writing about literature, but that went as well as you’d imagine.

2 – Quirky and interesting stories from throughout history. I just find these kind of articles interesting and they have made me very decent money on places like Medium. I’ve had a few articles go viral there and make three figures each, so will stick with Medium for that lottery.

3 – Science fiction and fantasy. Even though I’m tall, good-looking and cool, I am a massive geek. When it comes to writing a newsletter, this option allows me to spend my time reading, gaming and watching stuff. Consequently, this was the option I picked. My hobby is now justified for work.

I’ll update how The Cosmic Scroll is going

I started The Cosmic Scroll last week, so it is still ludicrously early days. But if you fancy reading the latest news relating to science fiction and fantasy books, films, TV shows, games, comics and more, then you can check it out – for free – by clicking on this link.

If you’re the kind of maniac who doesn’t care about science fiction and fantasy, but are curious about how Substack works, then you should check back in after a month or so, and I will update how it is going. Until then, live long and prosper.
