Rewriting top Medium articles for a new Substack newsletter

My science fiction and fantasy news Substack is only a couple of weeks old and is building slowly. (You can check out the Cosmic Scroll here.)

I have been travelling a lot recently, so it has been hard to add extra articles to the Substack, but things should calm down soon. I have stuck rigidly to the newsletter being published every Sunday, though.

It is good to be consistent.

However, having said that I might move the publication time to a Monday or some other time. If you thinking of starting a newsletter, it is good to experiment.

Starting another Substack using Medium articles

I’m only a couple of weeks in, but the Substack thing is quite fun. I have also found that Medium is no longer paying what it was and I have a ton of articles there, just lounging around and not doing much. There are also some that went pretty viral – like 60k reads and made really decent money. I am not one of those doom-mongers who claim Medium is dead, but I own the articles, and some of the stories are pretty damned interesting.

I’ve read that Google doesn’t like seeing duplicate content, so that either means rewriting, or adding in some link or other. I don’t know which one is easier, so will start with rewriting and possibly lengthening some pieces to make them 10% more exciting. If possible, obviously.

As always, I will update here with how it’s going and what seems to be working best. This is still in the idea stage, but what I really like about this plan is that it shouldn’t take too much effort. The research is done for each story. Also, I saw that some of the articles that went viral were posted on forums full of people lamenting that they were behind a paywall but didn’t want to pay for Medium membership. This should help solve that tragic issue.

In case you are curious, these stories include:

  • The gorilla who was brought up as a boy in an English village
  • North Korean 105-floor Hotel of Doom Deserted for 30 years
  • Here is the real reason photos are banned in the Sistine Chapel
  • The life Lord of the Flies – what happened when 6 boys were marooned for 15 months

And lots more. If you are on Medium, you can always check out my stuff by clicking on this.

Good luck with your writing journey and stay tuned! Oh, and sign up to my Substack!
